The module examines the practice and procedure of criminal law in England and Wales and introduces students to a range of property offences. The module offers the  opportunity to study the substantive law relating to these offences and gain an understanding of the associated legal processes and procedures relevant to proceedings in the Magistrates and the Crown Courts.

The module explores the law relating to legal advice and representation within criminal proceedings, including arrests, searches, interrogation and advising clients at the police station. It considers the charging procedure, bails, plea, pre-trial and case management procedure. The module examines the Jury trial, evidence, sentencing process on verdict and appeals against conviction and sentencing.

This module provides an opportunity to consider some of the professional issues and relevant legal processes that arise in relation to client representation and provides the opportunity to develop oral and written advocacy skills.

Quite possibly the most significant stage of your legal studies to date:

Level 6 Professional Practice Placement for Law - Friday PM

LLU615 with Jules McCarthy. Room HI 003 weekly on Fridays between 1300 - 1500.

Beginning Sept 29th we’ll meet each week during the first month until reading week.

As a Law Lecturer & industry talent manager, I’m really excited to be working with you this year - To be back at Birmingham Newman; watching a room full of potential, develop into this year’s graduates -  Academic life, is all about finding your potential, developing legal perception & pursuing your career goals in a direction that will best serve your personal ambitions. Which is a fancy way of saying ‘getting you to where you’d like to be in life’. This semester you will need to secure a placement & build a reflective portfolio as the first part of a two component assessment.

Our reality check of course, is that you’re aiming for a placement in a truly competitive marketplace & so I’ll be introducing you to guest speakers and industry practitioners who can help to signpost you towards making great choices. Try not to miss our first session because I’ll need to be clear on your progress, focus (or possible inertia?) and how you’ll be managing this module? So do start thinking about  how you'll be developing your prof prax legal portfolio.

As with all great adventures - The first step is getting started.  So if you have any questions or worries about that first step - Please do email me at Julie.McCarthy@staff.newman.ac.uk before our first session.

See you on Friday 29th. (‘Best friend’ insider guidance - Don’t miss this first week, because trying to play catch up later, could diminish your best chances of passing well)

Jules
