Help! A Panopto video on Moodle is just showing black! If you ever find that an embedded Panopto video on a Moodle page will not play for you and just shows black, this means you need to login to Panopto to get it to work. To login to Panopto, you need to go to Panopto directly, either by the link you have on MyNewman or the link in the Useful links tab on Moodle. Once you have logged into Panopto, return to the Moodle page with the video on and then refresh the page and it should work! If it still does not work, please contact e-Learning and we will investigate further. |
Logging into Teams desktop not working?Have you had issues with logging into Microsoft Teams with your University account? Did you know that there are two versions of the Teams App and that could be the reason why your login does not work. The version of Teams that you need to use for Birmingham Newman University is Microsoft Teams (work or school) and it will say exactly this on your computer or phone (see screenshot below). If this does not solve your login issue, please come and see us in the e-Learning office, with your device, and we can try to help you set-up your Teams app. |
Modules missing from My CoursesIf you ever go to your My Courses page on Moodle and discover you are missing module pages, this could be down to a few things.

Resit LinksThroughout the year, you’ll encounter resit submission links on Moodle. You will still see these resit links whether you have a resit or not because the system automatically generates a resit link for every Moodle assignment that has had a due date in the past at the time of creation. This means that just because you see a resit link does not mean you need to submit to it. Only submit to it if you have been officially granted a resit (you’d receive an email notification) However, resit links are not just for resits, they are also for Mitigating Circumstances. Again, you will know if you have been granted Mitigating Circumstances because you would have applied for them and received an email notifying you that they have been granted. Just because it says resit on the link, does not mean it will be treated as so; the relevant teams will be notified of your mitigating circumstances.

ResitsMake sure you know where your submission links are. Resit links are in the Assessment Information section of the module page. You may need to go back to the Moodle when you originally took the Module. Make sure to submit in plenty of time. Uploading to the system is not instant and you should allow time to check you have submitted the correct document. Resits DO NOT have a late period. Once it passes 12pm you can no longer submit. If you have any problems with finding a resit link or uploading a submission, please contact the e-Learning team in plenty of time before the deadline and we will do all we can to help you. SEAtS and WifiAre you experiencing issues with logging your attendance? A loading wheel of doom? One of our key tips is to make sure you connect your phone to the Eduroam Wifi. There are many places in the university that phones lose signal, and if you are using Public Newman Wifi it might look like you are connected but your connection has timed out, so using Eduroam is the strongest option for best connection. IT have created a guide on how to connect to Eduroam, on the Self-service Portal. |
TurnItIn End User License AgreementWhen you submit an assignment for the first time, you will have to accept the terms and conditions for using Turnitin. When you first attempt to submit to a Moodle assignment you will see a link which asks you to accept the EULA (End-User Licence Agreement). Click on that link and scroll through the terms and conditions and then click the Accept button at the bottom. If you cannot see the terms and conditions straightaway, please reload the page in your web browser. |
TurnItIn ErrorsHave you ever submitted a TurnItIn file and got an “X” for your similarity report or even a big red error message? If this has happened to you, always contact the e-Learning Service Desk as soon as possible and we can help. Below are some of the more common reasons why this happens and what to do:
For more detailed information see the Self-Service portal guide to What to name your file and what file types are acceptable. |
TurnItIn Practice AssignmentYou can practise submitting an assignment and checking the similarity report that Turnitin produces using the Turnitin Practice assignment. You can find the link to the Moodle page with the practice assignment on either the Moodle Home Page or via the Useful links menu at the top of the Moodle screen. When you submit your assignment, a similarity report is produced after about 10-15 minutes. This will happen for your first three submissions to the same assignment in Moodle in any given 24-hour period. If you re-submit your assignment a fourth time, in the same 24 hours, the new similarity report will be available after 24 hours. The practice assignment has been set up so that your submitted assignment is not stored in the Turnitin repository of papers. This means that when you come to submit the same paper to the official assignment link in the course module in Moodle, Turnitin will not check for any similarities with the version of your work that you submitted to the practice assignment earlier. |
Uploading an assignment you have stored on the Cloud (OneDrive/Google Drive/iCloud)Storing your documents on the cloud is highly recommended; it means you can access your files on any computer, anywhere, but when it comes to submitting your assignment, it can cause some issues. Unlike submitting a document stored on your device (computer, phone, tablet etc.) you should not click and drag the file from the Cloud to the submission point as this sometimes does not submit the file, but sometimes a shortcut, which means no one else can access your submission. One way to judge if your tutor can access the file you have uploaded is if there is a TurnItIn report; if one is not generated, please contact e-Learning before the deadline and we can help. Here are some guides on how to submit a file you have stored on OneDrive and one on files stored on Google Drive, it is a similar process for files stored on iCloud, but we do not have an individual guide for it. |
